{"id":176,"date":"2015-03-12T23:10:37","date_gmt":"2015-03-13T03:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.datagoneodd.com\/blog\/?p=176"},"modified":"2015-03-12T23:44:14","modified_gmt":"2015-03-13T03:44:14","slug":"the-lost-art-of-fact-checking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.datagoneodd.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/12\/the-lost-art-of-fact-checking\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lost Art of Fact Checking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you were watching ABC&#8217;s Nightline this past weekend, you would have seen <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Nightline\/video\/sexual-assault-campus-women-forward-film-29460534\">this segment<\/a> on the new campus sexual assault documentary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehuntinggroundfilm.com\/\">The Hunting Ground<\/a>. \u00a0About 4 minutes into the segment, you would have gotten to the supposed FBI statistic I discussed in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.datagoneodd.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/25\/how-to-lie-and-mislead-with-rape-statistics-part-1\/\">How To Lie And Mislead with Rape Statistics: Part 1<\/a>. \u00a0Here is a transcriptions of the relevent part:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annie_E._Clark\">Annie Clark<\/a>: It&#8217;s hard because there is such a stigma attached. \u00a0It is the only crime where we blame the victim.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Amy Robach (ABC News):\u00a0And, there&#8217;s a notion out there, that there&#8217;s a high level of false reporting when it comes to rape.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Annie Clark: The false reporting rate on sexual assault is 2-8% according to the FBI, which is the same rate, if not lower, than any other crime.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve read my linked blog post on the subject, you know that there is simply no FBI statistic that finds a 2-8% false reporting rate for rape. \u00a0In 1995, 1996, and 1997 the FBI <em>did<\/em> publish an 8% false reporting rate, but rather than being &#8220;the same rate, if not lower, of any other crime&#8221; here is what they actually found<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-176-1' id='fnref-176-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(176)'>1<\/a><\/sup>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1995<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The \u201c<span class=\"highlight selected\">unfounded<\/span>\u201d rate, or percentage of complaints determined through investigation to be false, is higher for forcible rape than for any other Index crime. In 1995, 8 percent of forcible rape complaints were \u201cunfounded,\u201d while the average for all Index crimes was 2 percent.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>1996<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The \u201cunfounded\u201d rate, or percentage of complaints determined through investigation to be false, is higher for forcible rape than for any other Index crime. Eight percent of forcible rape complaints in 1996 were \u201cunfounded,\u201d while the average for all Index crimes was 2 percent.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>1997<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>A higher\u00a0percentage of complaints of forcible rape are determined \u201cunfounded,\u201d\u00a0or found by investigation to be false, than for any\u00a0other Index crime. While the average of \u201cunfounded\u201d rates for all Crime Index offenses was 2 percent in 1997, 8 percent of forcible rape complaints were \u201cunfounded\u201d for the same timeframe.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While this isn&#8217;t quite as bad as if Robach had used this statistic, it still represents pretty poor journalism in my eyes. \u00a0This was a pre-taped interview and Robach clearly knew ahead of time that they were going to bring up this stat as sets up Clark to deliver her line . \u00a0How long would it take a professional fact checker\u00a0to find out that not only did the FBI statistic in question not exist, but the real statistic made rather the opposite point? 5 minutes? 10? Also of note is the fact that approximately 15 seconds before the above exchange occurred, Robach herself used a different sexual assault statistic<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-176-2' id='fnref-176-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(176)'>2<\/a><\/sup>, so we know that ABC staff was already researching sexual assault statistics.
